Rain-triggered landslide kills three in a Cebu City hillside village

Heavy rain set off a landslide around noon on 9 October in Sitio Riverside, Barangay Pulangbato, Cebu City, burying two houses. Three members of one family died, two of them young children, and a fourth was rescued and taken to hospital. About 35 families nearby were told to move to the barangay gym because the slope is still unstable, and the Mines and Geosciences Bureau is due to assess it. PAGASA said the Intertropical Convergence Zone would keep bringing rain and thunderstorms to the Visayas on 10 October.

What it means for Carcar

The same rain is falling across the province. If your house sits on a slope or below a cut hillside in Carcar, watch for cracks in the ground, tilting posts or trees, and muddy water seeping from the slope, and leave early when rain is heavy and steady. Know your barangay's evacuation point and follow the city disaster office's advisories.

Health

Metro Cebu air hits 'very unhealthy' again

The Environmental Management Bureau in Central Visayas (EMB-7) rated Metro Cebu's air 'very unhealthy' on the morning of 9 October, with a fine-particle (PM2.5) index of 165 at 7 a.m. It eased to 'unhealthy for sensitive groups' by 4 p.m., while the Toledo City station read 'good'. EMB-7 blames local sources such as vehicle exhaust and industry, not haze from Indonesia. With the southwest monsoon over, cool mornings trap the particles near the ground. The air has been unhealthy on most days since 30 September.

What it means for Carcar

The reading comes from the Metro Cebu station, not from Carcar, so treat it as a warning rather than a measure of the air at home. If you commute to Cebu City, or have asthma, heart or lung problems, wear an N95 or KN95 mask outdoors, avoid busy roads in the early morning, and keep children and older relatives indoors when the index is high.

Jobs

Teleperformance holds a Cebu job fair on 15 October

Teleperformance Philippines (TP) is hiring about 6,000 people in Cebu and Cagayan de Oro for customer service and business support work on accounts in telecoms, healthcare, travel, finance, retail, digital advertising and sales. Its Cebu job fair is a one-day event on 15 October at Seda Ayala Center Cebu in Cebu Business Park. Experienced BPO workers, fresh graduates, career shifters and first-time jobseekers can all apply. Sign-on bonuses are offered for some accounts, but no salary figures were given.

What it means for Carcar

If you are looking for work, bring a valid ID, an updated resume, a pen and a phone with mobile data for the QR sign-up. The fair is in Cebu City, so leave Carcar early. Ask about pay, shift times and the account before you accept an offer. TP is a private company and we have no link to it.

Capitol starts mapping Cebu's water sources for El Niño

The Cebu Provincial Inter-LGU Waterworks Systems Office has started an inventory of water sources across the province, large and small, that could feed water systems, irrigation or small impounding dams. Governor Pamela Baricuatro ordered it to prepare for El Niño. Each source is checked for elevation, water quality and volume. Early data point to rivers in north and south Cebu as possibly important, but the office says it needs more monitoring before it can say how much water they give or whether supply will hold up in a long drought.

What it means for Carcar

This is planning work, and new water systems take time to build, so it will not ease this dry season. For now, store water, fix leaking taps and pipes at home, and ask your barangay how water deliveries will work if your area runs dry.
