Things to do in Carcar City, Cebu: a visitor's guide

What to see and do in Carcar City, Cebu: the church, museum, rotunda and ancestral houses, plus lechon, chicharon, shoes, hot springs and the Kabkaban Festival.

Carcar City is a heritage city in south Cebu. The main things to do are visiting St. Catherine of Alexandria Church, the city museum, the rotunda and the ancestral houses, and eating lechon and buying chicharon at the public market and rotunda.

You can see the town centre in a day. For the city’s facts, history and barangays, read our complete guide to Carcar City.

Where do you eat Carcar lechon?

The lechon stalls are inside the public market (SunStar). Carcar lechon is on the salty side, and a little of the drippings is poured over it when it is served, according to a SunStar feature. Plain rice goes well with it.

Lechon is sold by the kilo. The same feature reported ₱400 a kilo in March 2018, with the price printed on a tarp at the stall. Prices change, so check the posted price. Ask for a taste before you buy, and compare a few stalls.

For stalls, prices and buying tips, read our Carcar lechon guide.

What is the Carcar rotunda?

The rotunda is beside the public market. SunStar describes it as a pre-war landmark from the American period. The chicharon, ampao and bocarillo stalls line up around it (SunStar).

Chicharon is fried pork skin. Ampao is puffed rice and bocarillo is candied coconut. All three are easy to bring home as pasalubong. Buy chicharon last, because the bags are bulky. Our guide to Carcar chicharon, ampao and bocarillo has more on what to look for.

What is St. Catherine of Alexandria Church?

St. Catherine of Alexandria is the town’s parish church. SunStar calls it centuries-old and mentions it alongside the old parish convent, Balay na Tisa and the Carcar Museum (SunStar).

In January 2022, Republic Act 11644 declared Carcar a heritage zone. SunStar reported that the law directs agencies to prepare plans to preserve, conserve, restore and maintain cultural and historical sites and structures.

Dress modestly when you visit and keep your voice down inside.

Which ancestral houses can you see?

Four Carcar ancestral houses received heritage markers from the National Historical Commission of the Philippines on 29 May 2010. They are the Noel House, the Mercado-Lucero Mansion, the Sarmiento-Osmeña House and the Silva House (SunStar).

SunStar’s 2014 visitor piece also says several private houses from the Spanish and American periods are well preserved, and it names Balay na Tisa.

Many of these are private homes. Look from the street, and ask before you go in or take close-up photos.

What is in the Carcar City Museum?

The museum is in a building put up in 1929 as a dispensary. It became the Carcar City Museum in 2008 (GMA News). GMA describes displays of corn milling stones and winning costumes worn by Carcar performers, and a building with stained glass windows and blue and white floors.

Our Carcar City Museum listing has the address on Padre Burgos Street, Poblacion III. Check locally that it is open before you go.

Is Carcar still the shoe capital of Cebu?

Carcar is known as the Shoe Capital of Cebu for its handmade leather footwear, but the trade has shrunk. SunStar reported in July 2026 that recorded footwear makers fell to five from ten in 2025. The industry flourished until about 2005. SunStar points to cheap imported shoes sold online, rising material costs and few young workers entering the trade.

That report mentions a shoe shop inside the public market. If you want a pair, ask around at the market and the shoe shops in town.

What is the Guadalupe Mabugnao Mainit hot spring park?

It is a protected national park in Barangay Guadalupe. According to Wikipedia, it was declared a national park in 1972 under Republic Act 6429 and covers 57.5 hectares. It has hot springs with cottages and pools, and a trail up to three caves. Cave Lorett and Cave Moymoy are the most explored. A dam in the park supplies Carcar’s water.

Sugbo.ph described a freshwater spring pool and a cave hike of about 40 to 45 minutes in March 2026. It suggests taking a Carcar-bound bus from the South Bus Terminal, then a habal-habal (motorcycle taxi) to the park entrance. Confirm the entrance fee at the gate.

Bring water, swimwear, sturdy footwear and a flashlight if you plan to go into the caves.

When is the Kabkaban Festival?

It is held in November, around the feast of St. Catherine of Alexandria. The Freeman reported the 2013 celebration on 23 November. Miss Carcar is crowned during the festival (SunStar). Read more in our Kabkaban Festival guide.

If you plan to stay overnight, look for a room early. Keep your valuables secure in crowds.
